ServiceWorks brings customer communication into one place—but that does not mean ServiceWorks needs to replace your phone system.
Our communication strategy is designed around a simple idea:
Use ServiceWorks for field service operations and customer messaging, use the voice platform that works best for your business, and bring the communication data together inside ServiceWorks.
This gives service companies the flexibility to use specialized phone platforms such as QO, RingCentral, and other supported voice providers while keeping customer history, messaging, and communication intelligence connected to the rest of their ServiceWorks workflow.

The Three Parts of the ServiceWorks Communication Ecosystem
1. ServiceWorks Switch: Text Messaging and Service Communication
Switch is the ServiceWorks communication layer used for SMS and ServiceWorks-driven customer messaging.
Automated text messages generated by ServiceWorks are sent through Switch. This includes communications such as:
- Appointment confirmations
- Appointment reminders
- Technician notifications
- Job-related updates
- Customer notifications
- Other automated SMS messages generated by ServiceWorks
Keeping these messages inside ServiceWorks allows communication to remain connected to the customer, job, appointment, and technician workflow.
For example, when ServiceWorks sends an appointment reminder, the system already understands which customer, job, technician, and appointment the message belongs to.
2. Voice Platforms: QUO, RingCentral, and Other Providers
For voice calling, businesses increasingly use dedicated communication platforms such as QUO or RingCentral.
ServiceWorks does not require customers to abandon those systems.
Instead, our goal is to integrate with leading voice platforms rather than recreate every capability of a full business phone system inside ServiceWorks.
Your team can continue using its preferred voice provider for:
- Incoming customer calls
- Call queues
- Call routing
- Extensions
- IVR
- Call recording
- Call management
- Other advanced phone-system capabilities
The voice platform handles the call.
ServiceWorks connects that communication back to your field service operation.
What Happens When a Call Takes Place?
When an integrated platform such as QO completes a call, ServiceWorks can receive information through the provider’s integration and webhooks.
That information can then be associated with ServiceWorks customer and operational data.
Depending on the integration, this can include information such as:
- Incoming and outgoing calls
- Caller information
- Call date and duration
- Call status
- Call recordings or recording references
- Transcriptions
- Communication history
- Text conversations occurring through the connected platform
This gives your team visibility into customer communication without forcing everyone to work from the same phone application.
Communication Intelligence
Bringing communication data into ServiceWorks also allows us to do something much more valuable than simply displaying a call log.
ServiceWorks can analyze communication alongside your operational data.

Through Call Intelligence and Customer Intelligence, ServiceWorks can help identify patterns such as:
- Why customers are calling
- Booking intent
- Customer sentiment
- Frustrated or dissatisfied customers
- Missed opportunities
- Frequently discussed problems
- Call volume and trends
- Customer communication history
- Relationships between conversations and service activity
This creates a more complete picture of the customer.

Instead of seeing only:
“Customer called for 6 minutes.”
ServiceWorks can help provide context such as:
“This customer called about an existing refrigerator repair, asked about a delayed part, expressed frustration, and may require follow-up.”
That information becomes far more valuable when combined with the customer’s jobs, appointments, invoices, technicians, messages, and service history.
What About Text Messages Sent Through QUO?
If your team sends or receives text messages through QO and those events are available through the integration, ServiceWorks can bring that communication into ServiceWorks as well.
However, there is an important distinction:
ServiceWorks-generated automated SMS messages are sent through ServiceWorks Switch.
The integration with QUO allows us to capture communication occurring through QO so it can become part of the customer’s communication history and intelligence.
These are two different functions.
Calling From the ServiceWorks Mobile App
Technicians and field employees can make outbound calls from the ServiceWorks mobile experience using ServiceWorks Switch.
Currently, ServiceWorks does not initiate an outbound QO call directly from inside the ServiceWorks application.
So there are two different workflows:
ServiceWorks Switch
ServiceWorks → Switch → Customer
This is used when a ServiceWorks user initiates supported communication directly from ServiceWorks.
Integrated Voice Platform
Customer/Employee → QO, RingCentral, or another voice platform → ServiceWorks receives communication data
In this model, the voice provider manages the actual call while ServiceWorks receives the relevant activity and communication information.
Does ServiceWorks Have Its Own Inbound Phone System?
ServiceWorks has developed inbound voice functionality using Twilio technology.
However, our broader strategy is not to become another full-scale phone-system provider.
Voice platforms such as QO and RingCentral specialize in telephony infrastructure, routing, call queues, IVR, devices, extensions, and enterprise voice management.
ServiceWorks specializes in field service management.
Our focus is therefore increasingly on connecting the two.
The objective is:
Best-of-breed voice platform + ServiceWorks field service workflow + ServiceWorks communication intelligence.
A Simple Way to Think About It
The ServiceWorks communication architecture can be viewed like this:
VOICE

QUO / RingCentral / Other Voice Provider
↓
Calls, recordings, transcripts, and communication events

ServiceWorks
↓
Customer Intelligence / Call Intelligence / Customer History

Automated appointment and operational messaging remains connected directly to the ServiceWorks workflow.
Why We Designed It This Way
Field service businesses should not have to choose between a great field service platform and a great phone system.
Separating these responsibilities allows each platform to do what it does best.
A specialized voice provider can focus on:
- Reliable calling
- Call routing
- IVR
- Queues
- Extensions
- Phone numbers
- Advanced telephony
ServiceWorks can focus on:
- Customers
- Jobs
- Scheduling
- Dispatch
- Technicians
- Estimates
- Invoices
- Parts
- Payments
- Automated customer communication
- Communication intelligence
The integration connects those worlds.
ServiceWorks Becomes the Customer Context Layer
Our long-term goal is not simply to record that a conversation occurred.
We want ServiceWorks to understand how that conversation relates to the customer’s service experience.
For example:
Call → Customer → Job → Technician → Appointment → Parts → Invoice → Follow-up
When communication becomes part of the operational workflow, your team has better context and can make better decisions.
That is why ServiceWorks is building toward an ecosystem where customers can use the voice platform that works best for their organization while ServiceWorks brings the communication, field service activity, and intelligence together.

The Bottom Line
ServiceWorks is not trying to replace your phone system.
We want customers to be able to use strong voice platforms such as QO, RingCentral, and other providers while ServiceWorks remains the operational hub for the service business.
Switch powers ServiceWorks messaging.
Voice providers power voice communication.
ServiceWorks connects the communication to the customer and the field service workflow—and turns that information into actionable intelligence.
That combination gives service businesses flexibility without sacrificing customer context.
